A team of Data Scientists have used Machine Learning to develop a model which could help services tackle inequalities and minimise carbon output in their planning and delivery. The model, estimated to be up to 80 times faster than manual methods has the potential to save vital resources in service planning and delivery.

Our national Health Services Modelling Associates (HSMA) programme returned in October as HSMA 5. Using an innovative mentoring system, the scheme offers staff working in policing and health and social care organisations the opportunity to develop skills in modelling and data science and apply them, in small project groups, to a project to address an important issue for their organisation.

Find out more about how Karl Vile’s HSMA project findings were included in DPT’s recently successful application for government investment from a national package designed to modernise and transform NHS services. A £50 million investment will deliver enhanced new facilities and equipment for NHS patients in Devon, of which 8 million will provide essential extra capacity for people who need inpatient care in the form of a new adult mental health ward for Torbay Hospital, which will ultimately reduce the need to send people out of Devon for treatment.

Many congratulations to Sebastian Rachuba, who was awarded the Steve Gallivan prize at the EURO Working Group on Operational Research Applied to Health Services (ORAHS) 2017 conference for his project with the RD&E Hospital on modelling capacity requirements for the CDU in the A&E (which was conducted alongside the HSMA scheme).
